In California, Board of Chiropractic Examiners Charts New Direction

SACRAMENTO – The Board of Chiropractic Examiners (BCE) took steps to restore leadership and return its focus to the important business of protecting Californians. Meeting in closed session, Board members voted to appoint Brian Stiger as Acting Executive Director, replacing Catherine Hayes, and to immediately begin searching for a permanent Executive Director.

Stiger is on loan to the Board from the California Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA), where he is the Chief of the Bureau of Home Furnishings and Thermal Insulation and the Bureau of Electronic and Appliance Repair.
“We accepted DCA’s offer to loan us Mr. Stiger because of his proven qualifications,” said Dr. Richard Tyler, Chair of BCE. “He has the experience in licensing, enforcement and personnel management that will allow us to operate smoothly while we search for a permanent Executive Director.”

The first order of business, according to Stiger, will be to restore a sense of normalcy among the Board’s professional staff. “In recent weeks, there have been a lot of distractions, and it’s been somewhat disruptive for the people who do the day-to-day business of protecting Californians,” said Stiger. “My role will be to help re-focus our attention on the routine but vital tasks of licensing and enforcement.”

Dr. Tyler also vowed to help restore productivity to the Board.

“The events of the last few weeks have made us all stop and think about what we do,” said Dr. Tyler. “We have all agreed that we need to redouble our efforts to taking a thoughtful, deliberative approach to the matters that come before us. Many of us have strong opinions, and that’s a good thing. It shows that we’re passionate about what we do. But that needs to be coupled with a willingness to listen, respect for others’ opinions and a willingness to compromise when necessary in order to meet the needs of California’s chiropractic consumers.”
