Chiropractors Fight Hunger and Feed Hope for Families in Manitoba

WINNIPEG – Winnipeg Harvest applauds the Manitoba Chiropractors’ Association for their assistance with food collection efforts to aid food programs across Manitoba. Thanks to the efforts of Manitoba chiropractors, their staff, patients, friends, family and business associates over 140,744 lbs. of food was collected during the one-week drive.

Winnipeg Harvest provides food to over 300 partner agencies across Manitoba. “We continue to feed families long after the holiday season ends”, states David Northcott, Executive Coordinator Winnipeg Harvest. “Hunger and poverty issues are not limited to the inner city, we are working with the (M.A.F.B.) Manitoba Association of Food Bank members to respond to an increase from provincial communities who are requesting food for families. M.A.F. B. members share food with the hungry and operate, soup kitchens, food banks, breakfast, lunch and snack programs, daily, weekly and monthly. We wouldn’t be able to continue to share food without friends, like the Manitoba Chiropractors’ Association who continue to help us throughout the year.” According to the Canadian Association of Food Banks, Hunger Count 2007 Report, 3.7% of the provincial population accessed a food bank in March 2007, over 19,000 children.

Today, Winnipeg Harvest announced that Dr. Danielle Burtch of Atlas Chiropractic was the winner of the “Have a Heart for Harvest” challenge. The total donations received from the winning clinic tipped the scales at 11,625 lbs.

It is a week of activities as chiropractic offices held contests, hosted special events and encouraged their patients, business associates, family and friends to bring in food or a cash donation for Winnipeg Harvest. “We understand the importance of proper nutrition for peoples’ well-being,” states Dr. Richard Tapper, Events Chair for the Manitoba Chiropractors’ Association. “Collectively, we opened our hearts to feed hope and we recognize the efforts of Winnipeg Harvest to battle poverty on the front lines for families each day.”
